Performance By Design The S&S “Shorty” carbs do not use a traditional choke plate for starting enrichment. Instead a separate adjustable enrichment circuit is used for cold starts. The enrichment circuit is activated by pulling the enrichment lever on the air cleaner to the up position. Once the engine starts, the lever can be moved downward to function as an adjustable fast idle to keep a cold engine running until the bike is underway or the engine is warm enough to idle normally. By using an enrichment circuit instead of the usual choke mechanism, the bore of the carburetor is not restricted by hardware that is only used on cold starts. That means that the carb can supply more air to the engine at full throttle, and that equates to more power. Another reason the "Shorty" carbs are capable of making more power is the design of the air cleaner. This design takes into account two of the most significant factors that can improve air flow into a carburetor. The most important factor is a filter element that does not restrict the flow of air, and almost as important is the elimination of turbulence at the inlet of the carburetor. The filter area of the "Shorty" carbs is maximized by an ingenious backplate design that wraps slightly around the carb to allow room for a wider filter element than a straight backplate would allow. The pleated S&S filter element looks like paper, but is actually a special resin impregnated cellulose fiber media that provides excellent filtration as well as superior flow. That makes for improved performance and better engine protection. Reducing turbulence is almost as important as finding a filter media that allows air to pass with a minimum of restriction. The shape of the S&S air cleaner backplate provides a radiused inlet similar to an air horn or velocity stack. This provides a smooth path for air to follow while traveling into the carburetor inlet. This results in less turbulence which allows more air to flow into the carb. The flow of air is also enhanced by a directional cone inside the air cleaner cover which also directs the air smoothly into the inlet of the carburetor. Since the radiused inlet and directional cone are enclosed within the filter element, air flowing into the carb is not effected by turbulent air flowing past the carburetor when the motorcycle is traveling at high speeds. So the air cleaner cover and the filter element also play an important role in eliminating turbulence and increasing flow. While installing an S&S Super E or G carburetor on a stock engine will result in more power, the addition of a performance cam and exhaust system will result in even more power gains. The Easy Kit dramatically improves the power of the H-D Twin Cam engine and delivers unmatched throttle response and acceleration! Maximum horsepower is typically increased from 58-60 to 72-75 HP, and Max torque from 71-73 to 81-85 ft/lbs. This example "before and after" power increase was produced with the combination of the Mikuni HSR42, a Screamin' Eagle Air Filter and a set of (loud) Screamin' Eagle mufflers.

Polished

Polished HSR series carburetors (42, 45 and 48mm) are available for the custom builder. Mikuni takes special care to insure that the polishing is of the highest quality. The polished HSR42 and 45 carburetors are not available in kits and must be purchased separately. The HSR48 is only available in kit form, plain or polished, which do include a choke cable.

An Edelbrock carb can be purchased in a Quick Kit, or in a complete kit. Complete carburetor kits include an Edelbrock carburetor, air cleaner with K&N filter, all necessary installation hardware and installation instructions. The Quick Kits also include an Edelbrock Carburetor and are designed to be used with the stock manifold, throttle cables, and a Screamin' Eagle air cleaner. It includes all the necessary hardware for a quick and easy installation.

Important Note: Highly modified engines may require different combinations than listed here.

Dyno tests of a 40mm Edelbrock carburetor on a 1994 FXR showed a 5 horsepower gain over leading competitor's butterfly style carb. The 80-incher was equipped with Edelbrock / JE Pistons, Edelbrock Performer heads and camshaft, White Brothers 2-into-1 "E" series exhaust and a Crane Hi-4 ignition.

It is your direct means to select from 3 separate modes built into the FuelMaxx unit beneath your seat. RideMaxx Auto is the default setting at start-up. The custom fuel management optimizes your ride, actively attenuating power and fuel economy. It eliminates backfiring and maximizes the power curve, you’ll enjoy a new found smoothness of ride and added throttle response. The RideMaxx Power setting gives you the power you need, when you need it. You will experience up to 10% more power while eliminating backfiring with increased throttle response. At the core of the RideMaxx system is the FuelMaxx, which does the heavy lifting for the system. Your V-Twin is equipped with an ECU which is the brains for your bike.     Performance By Design The S&S “Shorty” carbs do not use a traditional choke plate for starting enrichment. Instead a separate adjustable enrichment circuit is used for cold starts. The enrichment circuit is activated by pulling the enrichment lever on the air cleaner to the up position. Once the engine starts, the lever can be moved downward to function as an adjustable fast idle to keep a cold engine running until the bike is underway or the engine is warm enough to idle normally. By using an enrichment circuit instead of the usual choke mechanism, the bore of the carburetor is not restricted by hardware that is only used on cold starts. That means that the carb can supply more air to the engine at full throttle, and that equates to more power. Another reason the "Shorty" carbs are capable of making more power is the design of the air cleaner. This design takes into account two of the most significant factors that can improve air flow into a carburetor. The most important factor is a filter element that does not restrict the flow of air, and almost as important is the elimination of turbulence at the inlet of the carburetor. The filter area of the "Shorty" carbs is maximized by an ingenious backplate design that wraps slightly around the carb to allow room for a wider filter element than a straight backplate would allow. The pleated S&S filter element looks like paper, but is actually a special resin impregnated cellulose fiber media that provides excellent filtration as well as superior flow. That makes for improved performance and better engine protection. Reducing turbulence is almost as important as finding a filter media that allows air to pass with a minimum of restriction. The shape of the S&S air cleaner backplate provides a radiused inlet similar to an air horn or velocity stack. This provides a smooth path for air to follow while traveling into the carburetor inlet. This results in less turbulence which allows more air to flow into the carb. The flow of air is also enhanced by a directional cone inside the air cleaner cover which also directs the air smoothly into the inlet of the carburetor. Since the radiused inlet and directional cone are enclosed within the filter element, air flowing into the carb is not effected by turbulent air flowing past the carburetor when the motorcycle is traveling at high speeds. So the air cleaner cover and the filter element also play an important role in eliminating turbulence and increasing flow. While installing an S&S Super E or G carburetor on a stock engine will result in more power, the addition of a performance cam and exhaust system will result in even more power gains.     Please be advised most parts are special ordered at time of your purchase. In general most items take 1-2 weeks shipping times in USA(does not include special order items). Please allow proper time for shipping and handling of product. Some times items are back ordered, this is out of our control. If it will take over four (4) weeks for us to receive from our suppliers we will contact you for options (i.e. refund or wait for delivery). Normal delivery time is 1-2 weeks on most items.     Refund/Exchange Policy We offer a 30 Money Back or exchange Guarantee on almost every product we offer. (Most items are exchange only). Refunds do not include special order items. Items will be exchanged if received damaged for the same part only. Please call customer service at 612-296-7771, in advance to obtain an RMA number (Return Merchandise Authorization) within 30 days of purchase date.     What is a special order item? One we don't stock normally, if your local shop does not stock it we most likely don't either. Do to the large amount of part for motorcycles it is hard to stock everything, our suppliers are 1-3 day shipping to us on most items. We send on to you as soon as we receive an item.
